The

WAG SPAY AND NEUTER FUND

was created in 2005 in response to a need in the Sea to Sky Corrider to find an effective solution to the pet overpopulation problem.

Spaying and neutering is the most humane, effective and cost efficient method of controlling pet overpopulation.

The purpose of the Spay and Neuter Fund is to provide financial assistance for spaying and neutering services to those members of our communities who are most in need.

WAG thanks the ANIMAL WELFARE FOUNDATION OF CANADA for the grant which launched the spay and neuter program for the First Nations Community of Mount Currie.

WAG has also created a spay and neuter financial assistance program for low income families. This program is called FANS

WAG-Mount Currie Spay and Neuter Project

WAG and the Mount Currie Band Council have formed a partnership in order to address animal control and animal welfare issues in that community.

In 2004, 44% of the dogs received by WAG originated from Mount Currie. In 2005, this number has climbed to 61.5 %. WAG and Mount Currie would like to see a reduction in the number of homeless and unwanted animals.

WAG and Mount Currie organized 4 spay and neuter clinics to offer free spaying and neutering services to Mount Currie residents. These clinics took place on Oct 16th, Oct 23rd, Oct 30th,  and Nov 6th, 2005. A total of 78 dogs were spayed or neutered by an outstanding team of volunteers.

Update-May 28, 2006

On Sunday May 28 we completed our second spay and neuter clinic of the spring. This spring saw a total of 29 dogs from the community of Mount Currie spayed and neutered. This brings our grand total of spay and neuters to 107 since we began the program last fall.

WAG thanks all our amazing volunteers from Whistler, Pemberton and Mount Currie who all work together to make this happen. We are especially grateful to Dr. David Lane and Dr. Peter Dobias for performing the surgeries.
